BC Update: No.38 - Amendment to wallchart 'Reinforcing Steel in New Zealand'

29 Mar 2006: In September 2005 a copy of the wallchart ‘Reinforcing Steel in New Zealand - A quick guide for designers, building consent authorities and contractors’ dated June 2005 was distributed together with our Practice Advisory 7.

It has been brought to our attention that the Applications section of this chart and Note 5 are being interpreted as indicating that imported grade 500E QT steels failed to comply with AS/NZS 4671. Note 5 was amended on the Department’s website version of this wallchart in December 2005 to clarify the situation and now reads as follows.

Individual test results do not necessarily indicate compliance or non-compliance with AS/NZS 4671 because of the small sample size and testing protocol adopted. Refer to the Department’s Report on Grade 500E Steel Reinforcement for the full SGS Test report.

The Department anticipates updating and reissuing the wallchart when significant new information becomes available regarding Grade 500E steel available on the New Zealand market.
