BIA Management Appointments

A new management team has been appointed to steer the BIA through its strategic realignment and transition. The team will remain in place until the future structure of the BIA has been determined, subject to the completion of the Building Act review.

Chief Executive

Richard Martin has been appointed as chief executive of the BIA.

Richard is a qualified structural engineer, has had senior roles in the oil industry and the manufacturing sector, and has also held a number of senior public sector roles. Most recently, he co-ordinated the creation of the Department of Internal Affairs' Weathertight Homes Resolution Service and has been working with the Ministry of Economic Development and the BIA to implement the Hunn recommendations at a strategic level.

Senior Management Team

Following the appointment of Richard Martin as chief executive, a new senior management team has been put in place as part of the overall strategic realignment of the organisation.

Reporting directly to Richard Martin, this team is aiding the BIA through its transitional period as the Review of the Building Act nears completion, and in order to help the organisation implement the Hunn Report recommendations more effectively. Additionally, the team will assist the organisation to refocus on engaging more proactively with industry and consumers.

The members of the senior management team are:

Tony Hood    Operations Manager
Tony is responsible for the management of technical operations and additionally oversees two teams project managing the implementation of the Hunn Report recommendations.

Tony has been involved with major banking and technology projects throughout his career and has significant management experience. Recent projects have included the establishment of the Regulator role for Workers compensation for the Department of Labour and the implementation of technology for Kiwibank.

Chris Rutledge    Transition Manager
Chris is responsible for the BIA's management systems and processes, and for organisations development.

Chris has an extensive background in human resources. Previous companies include the Electricity Commission, the States Service Commission, and, most recently, Telecom New Zealand, where Chris held a number of senior management positions.

John Walsh    Public Affairs Manager
John is responsible for the management of stakeholder relationships, industry and consumer communications and education.

John has worked in communications for more than 15 years and has held senior positions in public relations consultancies and corporate organisations.

Completing the line-up of the senior management team are: Bill Porteous in his new role as Chief Policy Adviser and Brian Cashin as Principal Legal Adviser.
