Statistically, building and construction (construction industry) is made up of three sub-groups: residential building, non-residential building, and other construction. These sub-groups are discussed below where possible in nominal (current dollar terms), and volume terms (real terms).
Investment in buildings
The building and construction industry produces long-lived assets, and so most building and construction is treated statistically as investment. In the March 2007 year National Account statistics indicate that: approximately $10.8 billion was invested in residential buildings; $5.3 billion in non-residential buildings; $5 billion on other construction (including government infrastructure investment); and $0.62 billion in land improvements.
The outputs of the building and construction industry is estimated at over $21 billion in the March 2007 year.
