Simpler rules for backcountry huts

Building Code

From 31 October 2008, Department of Conservation backcountry huts will no longer need to meet certain Building Code requirements that are not consistent with their special character. The huts will not need to have:

  • smoke alarms and emergency lighting
  • access and sanitary facilities for wheelchair users
  • a drinkable water supply and artificial lighting.

The Department of Conservation manages more than 800 back-country huts in New Zealand. They offer a unique experience for domestic and foreign visitors alike, emphasising self-reliance and providing only basic services. Many backcountry huts will be coming up for replacement in the next few decades. The simplified Building Code requirements will ensure the Department of Conservation can do this without undue costs and difficulties.

Compliance Document

Consultation recently concluded on a Compliance Document for backcountry huts that will accompany the Building Code changes. The new Compliance Document is expected to be published before the end of the year.
