2008 Society of Local Government Managers Conference

The New Zealand Society of Local Government Mangers (SOLGM) recently held its annual conference on 7-9 September at Paihia. The Department of Building and Housing was one of the sponsors of this event, and was represented by Malcolm MacMillan from the Consent Authority Capability and Performance Group.

SOLGM is the professional organisation for local government management in New Zealand, and represents and supports its members, local government managers and staff through professional development and networking opportunities, membership support services, good-practice resources and advocacy work.

The theme of the conference was 'Creating Wellbeing in Communities' and covered the following topics:

  • Environmental Wellbeing - the green building revolution; sustainable management of waterways in Waitakere; and the management of carbon emissions in Auckland
  • Social Wellbeing - tackling violence through the Safer Christchurch Strategy and Safe Waitakere on the Ground; and creating collaborative partnerships between government agencies, NGOs and community organisations
  • Economic Wellbeing - the development of metropolitan areas such as Invercargill and Porirua City; and rural economic development including the Hurunui Irrigation Project and the feasibility of land-based aquaculture
