Licensing opens for Roofers, Bricklayers and Blocklayers, and External Plasterers
On 1 November licensing opened for Roofers, Bricklayers and Blocklayers, and External Plasterers
Development of the classes was achieved with the help of industry representatives who generously gave up their time to help us develop the national standards and assessment criteria.
The scheme is designed to ensure building practitioners are competent and accountable for the work they do. It promotes, recognises and supports the professional skills and behaviour of building practitioners. This will support homes and buildings being designed and built right the first time.
The benefits of licensing for practitioners
Becoming a licensed Roofer, Bricklayer or Blocklayer, or External Plasterer will automatically give practitioners the same 'mark of quality' status as other classes of building practitioners such as carpenters and designers.
Licensing formally recognises competency and experience in the building industry. The benefits of licensing include being listed on the public register of licensed practitioners (for future clients or employers to see), being issued the LBP licensing card, using the LBP logo for professional marketing, and being supported by the advertising and marketing of the scheme.
The benefits for home and building owners
Licensing will help build consumer confidence in the sector. The public can have greater confidence that licensed building practitioners designing and working on their homes are competent, and that the work is designed and built right, first time.
Professional development
Licensing will promote, recognise and support professional skills in the industry. When a practitioner signs up for licensing, they are also signing a commitment to maintain their skills in their area of practice.
It is intended that, over time, licensing will link to the national qualifications and training framework. This is proposed for 2015.
More licensing to come next year
The three new licensing classes add to the seven introduced last year. Three more classes are planned to be introduced in 2009 for practitioners working in the areas of concrete structure, steel structure and foundations.
