Incredible response to design competition
Almost 140 entries have been received for the Starter Home Design Competition run by the Department. The competition sought exciting and innovative plans for a quality, affordable first home. It was open to designers, architects, builders and students.
Entries closed in late November 2008 and judging is now under way. One hundred and thirty-two of the entries were from people working in the industry, and the rest from students.
The panel of judges is delighted with the number and quality of the entries, although admits it has a challenging task ahead. Judging will take place over the next three months.
David Kelly, Deputy Chief Executive for Building Quality, Department of Building and Housing says: 'It is exciting to see the wealth of flair and talent New Zealanders have to offer. This competition provides a real opportunity to generate designs for modest homes that provide an affordable option for home buyers.'
The winners will be announced in March 2009, and one of the winning designs will be built.
