Skills maintenance training providers

To remain licensed, Licensed Building Practitioners (LBPs) must maintain their skills and knowledge. They need to acquire skills maintenance points and submit these to the Registrar at least every two years. LBPs submit these points either online or using the record of skills maintenance form when they undergo their annual relicensing. There is an ‘activities approved by the Registrar’ option on these.

Activities approved by the Registrar

To help LBPs with skills maintenance the Registrar has approved various activities from training providers, refer activities approved by the Registrar.

The advantages of being a training provider

Once an activity is approved training providers can promote their activities by:

  • Using the LBP logo
  • Advertising it as being approved by the Registrar and counting towards the LBP scheme
  • Advertising via the ‘activities approved by the Registrar’ web page.

Who can be a training provider

You can apply to have an activity approved even if it is not your core business. The activity must meet certain criteria and it is the activity that gains the approval, not the training provider.

How are points allocated to an activity?

The key criteria are to ensure that the activity aligns with the licence competencies. The closer the activity aligns to the competencies the greater chance it has of being approved—refer table below for a summary of the competencies.

As a general rule, one hour of activity (which excludes lunches, socialising etc) equals one point. However, where an activity is based on the introduction of a new standard, for example, it may be given greater weight and result in additional points being allocated.

Using the LBP Logo

LBP logo.

The LBP logo is an important part of the scheme. The logo is a trusted quality mark. As such, the Department has strict guidelines about how it is used.

If your activity has been approved by the Registrar and you have agreed to the terms and conditions of the LBP logo use, you can display the logo along with the activity you are promoting.

How long does the approval last?

Approval can be sought for a maximum period of two years. Any amendments made to an activity during that time must be sent to the Registrar to attach to the original application and the approval will continue.
Where an activity is fundamentally altered, then a new application for approval must be sought. For example, where new legislation is introduced or a code is amended that changes the content of a workshop, the onus is on you to stop running the activity and amend the content.

How to apply

You will need to complete the Activity approval application and scan and email this to info@dbh.govt.nz or send to:
