Building consents
A building consent is the formal approval, issued under section 49 of the Building Act 2004, for an applicant to undertake building work. Building work includes work in connection with the construction, alteration, demolition or removal of a building.
If you are undertaking repairs to a leaky building which has failed within the minimum durability requirements of the Building Code, typically 15 years of cladding, then you must get building consent.
For basic information about the building process and building consents, see the Building consents and inspections process in our Building section.
