Residential construction
The number of building consents authorised for new dwellings peaked in the year ended June 2004 at 33,251 and there are currently 25,732 new dwelling consents authorised in the year to October 2007. The trend for the number of new dwelling consents authorised has been falling since June 2007. The volume of new dwelling consents is currently comparable with the number of consents authorised in early 2002.

Similarly, the trend for the value of residential building consents has been falling at the same time.
