Issue 12 - July 2011

In this issue we cover:

Leaky homes financial assistance package Bill passed by Parliament

Owners of leaky homes will now have an additional option for getting their homes fixed faster after the third reading of the Weathertight Homes Resolution Services (Financial Assistance Package) Bill in Parliament on 12 July, 2011.

Under the $1 billion package, qualifying home owners will receive a 25 per cent contribution from the Government and may receive 25 per cent from their local council. The contributions will be based on actual agreed repair costs.

The package is voluntary and offers an additional option to the current Weathertight Homes Resolution Service. Home owners who discover they have a leaky home must lodge a claim within 10 years of the completion of building work to access the financial assistance package.

The package will become available after Royal Assent is granted and the contribution criteria are published in the New Zealand GazetteDepartment of Internal Affairs website. . We will contact you again to let you know the date the package will be available.

Apartment owners can also qualify for the Financial Assistance Package

Claims that apartment owners are not eligible for the leaky homes financial assistance package are incorrect, says Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williamson.

“Owners of leaky apartments are entitled to the financial assistance package,” Mr Williamson said.

“Help has been a long time coming but this Government has stepped up to deliver home owners this financial assistance package,” Minister Williamson says. “I believe this is a fair solution that will assist many leaky home owners to get their homes fixed so they can move on with their lives.”

For more information on the proposed financial assistance package please see the financial assistance section of our website.
