*ARCHIVE* - Leaky homes info demand from non-English speakers 20 Nov 2003
In response to demand from non-English speakers for information about leaky homes, the Weathertight Homes Resolution Service (WHRS) is continuing its freephone information lines in six languages.
WHRS National Manager Dr Lisa Ferguson said the lines were set up in June and since then hundreds of people have called the freephone lines which provide information in Cantonese, Korean, Mandarin, Samoan, Tongan and Maori.
"It is clear that many non-English speakers are facing problems with leaky homes and we're pleased that they are using our freephone service to access information," Dr Ferguson said. "We set up the information lines to ensure that language issues did not hinder people from finding out about the leaky homes problem and the assistance available from the WHRS. There is clear demand for us to continue the service."
Each language has a dedicated toll-free number. Callers hear pre-recorded messages about leaky homes issues and the WHRS, and have the opportunity to leave their details so that their queries can be answered.
Brochures are also available in six languages to provide information about leaky homes and the WHRS to non-English speakers.
"We've had our brochure translated into traditional Chinese, simplified Chinese, Korean, Maori, Samoan and Tongan," Dr Ferguson said. "The brochures are available through Citizens Advice Bureau and community law offices, Government agencies and a wide range of community organisations. They are also available through our 0800 116 926 helpline, which operates from 8.30am to 7.00pm on weekdays, and our website www.weathertightness.govt.nz."
The freephone numbers, accessible at any time, are:
Cantonese 0800 100 073
Korean 0800 100 055
Mandarin 0800 100 082
Maori 0800 100 031
Samoan 0800 100 037
Tongan 0800 100 067
The WHRS was set up by the Government in December 2002 to help owners of homes less than 10 years old that are leaking and causing damage. It also helps homeowners with alterations less than 10 years old that are causing leaks. The Service offers free advice to owners of affected homes and provides free assessments to determine the extent of water damage. The WHRS also provides access to mediation and adjudication services to help resolve disputes over problems arising from leaky homes.
